12 months before

Sort your English language test (IELTS UKVI)

Most UK universities require IELTS 6.0–7.0 (or equivalent: PTE Academic UKVI, LanguageCert SELT, Trinity GESE). You need a SELT — Secure English Language Test — specifically approved by the UK Home Office for visa purposes. Start preparing now — most students take 3–6 months to reach the required score.

10–12 months before

Research and choose your universities

Research universities that offer your course and match your budget. Apply to 3–5 universities to maximise your chances. Consider location (London is more expensive to live in), course content, entry requirements, and deposit amounts. Most undergraduate applications go through UCAS; postgraduate applications go directly to the university.

💡 Russell Group universities (Oxford, Cambridge, Manchester, UCL etc.) are the most prestigious. But excellent universities like Coventry, Hertfordshire and Essex accept students with lower entry requirements and have lower deposits.

9–10 months before

Submit your university application

Undergraduate: Apply through UCAS (ucas.com) — the single portal for all UK universities. The main deadline is 29 January for most courses (earlier for Oxford and Cambridge — usually 15 October). Postgraduate: Apply directly to each university's website. Most accept rolling applications.

💡 Oxford and Cambridge: Apply by 15 October. Medicine and dentistry: Apply by 15 October. All other undergraduate: Apply by 29 January.

After offer received

Receive your offer and pay the deposit

Universities send conditional or unconditional offers. Once you accept, you must pay a tuition fee deposit to secure your place and trigger your CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies). Deposit amounts vary widely — from £1,000 to £5,500. See our university deposit table below for exact figures.

Prepare your bank funds (the 28-day rule)

This is where most student visa applications fail. You must show you have enough money in your bank account — held continuously for 28 days — before you apply for your visa. The amount is: your remaining tuition fees (after deposit) PLUS living costs. See our full breakdown in the Financial Requirements section below.

🚨 The 28-day clock starts the day you first have the required balance. If your balance drops below the required amount even for ONE day, you must start the 28 days again.

3–6 months before start

Apply for your Student visa online

Apply at gov.uk/student-visa. You will need: your CAS reference number, valid passport, IELTS/SELT certificate, bank statements (28-day rule), consent letter if using parents' account, proof of address, passport-style photo, and payment of the visa fee (£490 for students outside the UK) + Immigration Health Surcharge (£776/year of study).

After visa approval

Book your flight and accommodation

Once your visa arrives (usually as a vignette sticker in your passport), you can book your flight. Most students arrive 1–2 weeks before their course starts. Most universities offer guaranteed accommodation for first-year international students — apply for this as soon as you accept your offer, as places fill up fast.

💡 University halls cost £90–£250/week. Private accommodation costs £150–£400/week in London. Cities like Coventry, Nottingham and Bradford are significantly cheaper.

Arrival in UK

Collect your BRP (Biometric Residence Permit)

Within 10 days of arrival, collect your BRP from a post office or your university. Your BRP is your official residence permit — you'll need it to open a bank account, register with a GP, and prove your right to work. Do not lose it. The address for collection is printed in your visa approval letter.

First weeks

Register with a local NHS GP surgery as soon as you arrive — it's free and you're entitled to it. For banking, HSBC, Barclays, Monzo, Starling, and Revolut all offer student accounts. Some universities have partnerships that make opening an account easier. You'll need your BRP, proof of address, and university enrolment letter.

After graduation

Apply for the Graduate Route visa — stay 2 more years

After completing your degree, you automatically qualify for the Graduate Route visa — 2 years to work anywhere in the UK without a sponsor (3 years for PhD graduates). How much money do you need?

The UK Home Office requires you to prove you have enough money in your bank account to pay for your tuition fees AND live in the UK. These are the 2026 figures.

The full amount must be in your bank account (or your parents' account) for 28 consecutive days without dipping below even once. What gets student visa applications rejected

The UK Home Office rejects thousands of student visa applications every year for avoidable reasons. Know these before you apply.

🚫 The most common rejection reasons — and how to avoid them

❌ 28-day rule broken

Your balance dropped below the required amount even for one day during the 28-day period. This is the #1 reason for refusal.

✅ Fix: Set up an alert if balance drops. Do not touch the account for 29 days.

❌ Bank statement too old

Your bank statement was issued more than 31 days before you submitted your visa application.
