The best decision you'll ever make

The UK is the world's second most popular destination for international students — and for very good reason.

🏆
World-class universities
4 of the world's top 10 universities are in the UK — Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial and UCL. A UK degree is recognised and respected by employers in every country.
Shorter degrees — save money
UK Bachelor's degrees take 3 years (vs 4 in most countries). Master's degrees take just 1 year. You spend less time in education and enter the workforce faster.
🛂
2-year post-study work visa
After graduation, you can work anywhere in the UK for 2 years (3 years for PhD graduates) without needing a sponsor — giving you time to find a Skilled Worker job.
💼
Work while you study
Your Student visa allows you to work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during holidays — helping you fund your living costs.
🌍
Diverse, welcoming country
Over 700,000 international students from 180+ countries call the UK home. Cities like London, Manchester and Birmingham have large Nigerian, Ghanaian, Indian and Filipino communities.
🏥
Free NHS healthcare
Pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (£776/year) with your visa and you get full access to NHS healthcare — including GP, hospital and emergency treatment.
🎓
Thousands of scholarships
Chevening, Commonwealth, GREAT, Rhodes, Gates Cambridge and thousands more scholarships are available specifically for international students. Many are fully funded.
📈
Career-defining degree
UK graduates earn more and get promoted faster. A UK university name on your CV opens doors in finance, medicine, law, engineering and tech globally.

Every step — start to finish

Follow these 12 steps in order. We've made every step clear so you know exactly what to do and when.

Check your eligibility
Before anything else, find out whether you qualify for a UK Student visa and which universities match your qualifications. You need to be accepted by a UKVI-approved university (called a licensed sponsor) before you can apply for a visa.
💡 Tip: Use our free eligibility quiz — 7 questions and our AI tells you which UK visa route is right for you in 2 minutes.

Sort your English language test (IELTS UKVI)
Most UK universities require IELTS 6.0–7.0 (or equivalent: PTE Academic UKVI, LanguageCert SELT, Trinity GESE). You need a SELT — Secure English Language Test — specifically approved by the UK Home Office for visa purposes. Start preparing now — most students take 3–6 months to reach the required score.
⚠️ Important: Not all IELTS tests qualify. You must take IELTS for UKVI (not standard IELTS) or another approved SELT for your student visa application.

Research and choose your universities
Research universities that offer your course and match your budget. Apply to 3–5 universities to maximise your chances. Consider location (London is more expensive to live in), course content, entry requirements, and deposit amounts. Most undergraduate applications go through UCAS; postgraduate applications go directly to the university.
💡 Russell Group universities (Oxford, Cambridge, Manchester, UCL etc.) are the most prestigious. But excellent universities like Coventry, Hertfordshire and Essex accept students with lower entry requirements and have lower deposits.
4
⭐ Critical step
Write your personal statement
Your personal statement is the most important part of your university application. It tells the admissions team why you want to study this course, why at their university, what experience you have, and what you plan to do after graduating. A weak personal statement gets rejected even if your grades are excellent.
🤖 We built a powerful AI Personal Statement Generator — enter your details and our AI writes a complete, tailored personal statement for your course and university. You review and submit. Takes 10 minutes.

9–10 months before
Submit your university application
Undergraduate: Apply through UCAS (ucas.com) — the single portal for all UK universities. The main deadline is 29 January for most courses (earlier for Oxford and Cambridge — usually 15 October). Postgraduate: Apply directly to each university's website. Most accept rolling applications.
💡 Oxford and Cambridge: Apply by 15 October. Medicine and dentistry: Apply by 15 October. All other undergraduate: Apply by 29 January.
6
After offer received
Receive your offer and pay the deposit
Universities send conditional or unconditional offers. Once you accept, you must pay a tuition fee deposit to secure your place and trigger your CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies). Deposit amounts vary widely — from £1,000 to £5,500. See our university deposit table below for exact figures.
⚠️ You cannot get your Student visa without a CAS. You cannot get a CAS without paying the deposit. This is non-negotiable.

7
⭐ Most failed step
Prepare your bank funds (the 28-day rule)
This is where most student visa applications fail. You must show you have enough money in your bank account — held continuously for 28 days — before you apply for your visa. The amount is: your remaining tuition fees (after deposit) PLUS living costs. See our full breakdown in the Financial Requirements section below.
🚨 The 28-day clock starts the day you first have the required balance. If your balance drops below the required amount even for ONE day, you must start the 28 days again.

3–6 months before start
Apply for your Student visa online
Apply at gov.uk/student-visa. You will need: your CAS reference number, valid passport, IELTS/SELT certificate, bank statements (28-day rule), consent letter if using parents' account, proof of address, passport-style photo, and payment of the visa fee (£490 for students outside the UK) + Immigration Health Surcharge (£776/year of study).
💡 Apply no earlier than 6 months before your course starts. Processing takes 3–8 weeks for most countries. Use our VisaScore tool to check your application for rejection risks before you submit.

9
After visa approval
Book your flight and accommodation
Once your visa arrives (usually as a vignette sticker in your passport), you can book your flight. Most students arrive 1–2 weeks before their course starts. Most universities offer guaranteed accommodation for first-year international students — apply for this as soon as you accept your offer, as places fill up fast.
💡 University halls cost £90–£250/week. Private accommodation costs £150–£400/week in London. Cities like Coventry, Nottingham and Bradford are significantly cheaper.
10
Arrival in UK
Collect your BRP (Biometric Residence Permit)
Within 10 days of arrival, collect your BRP from a post office or your university. Your BRP is your official residence permit — you'll need it to open a bank account, register with a GP, and prove your right to work. Do not lose it. The address for collection is printed in your visa approval letter.
11
First weeks
Register with a GP and open a UK bank account
Register with a local NHS GP surgery as soon as you arrive — it's free and you're entitled to it. For banking, HSBC, Barclays, Monzo, Starling, and Revolut all offer student accounts. Some universities have partnerships that make opening an account easier. You'll need your BRP, proof of address, and university enrolment letter.
12
After graduation
Apply for the Graduate Route visa — stay 2 more years
After completing your degree, you automatically qualify for the Graduate Route visa — 2 years to work anywhere in the UK without a sponsor (3 years for PhD graduates). This is your opportunity to find a Skilled Worker job, which leads to long-term settlement and eventually British citizenship. VisaPath Pro's visa routes guide covers every step of this journey.

How much money do you need?

The UK Home Office requires you to prove you have enough money in your bank account to pay for your tuition fees AND live in the UK. These are the 2026 figures.

🏙️ Studying in London
£1,529
per month × 9 months = £13,761
Plus: Remaining tuition fees (after deposit)
Example: If tuition is £18,000 and you paid £2,000 deposit:
£16,000 + £13,761 = £29,761 total
🏘️ Studying outside London
£1,171
per month × 9 months = £10,539
Plus: Remaining tuition fees (after deposit)
Example: If tuition is £15,000 and you paid £2,000 deposit:
£13,000 + £10,539 = £23,539 total
⏱️ The 28-day rule — read this carefully
The full amount must be in your bank account (or your parents' account) for 28 consecutive days without dipping below even once. The last day of the 28-day period must be within 31 days of when you submit your visa application. If the balance drops below the required amount for even one day, your 28 days resets.

What's accepted: Current accounts · Savings accounts · Parents' accounts (with birth certificate + consent letter) · Government-sponsored student loans
What's NOT accepted: Cryptocurrency · Stocks and shares · Overdraft facilities · Credit card limits · Property values · Salary payslips alone
📌 Also budget for: Visa fee £490 · Immigration Health Surcharge £776/year · Flight £300–£800 · Accommodation deposit £500–£1,500

How much deposit does each university require?

The deposit is paid after you accept your offer. It comes off your total tuition fee. You need to pay it before you can get your CAS and apply for your visa.

Lowest deposits: Coventry, Hertfordshire, Anglia Ruskin, Teesside, East London, London South Bank, University of Strathclyde — all £1,000–£1,500. · ⚠️ Cardiff Met & University of South Wales require 50% of annual fees (£7,000–£9,000). Check your offer letter. · Table shows 70+ UK universities.

What gets student visa applications rejected

The UK Home Office rejects thousands of student visa applications every year for avoidable reasons. Know these before you apply.

🚫 The most common rejection reasons — and how to avoid them
❌ 28-day rule broken
Your balance dropped below the required amount even for one day during the 28-day period. This is the #1 reason for refusal.
✅ Fix: Set up an alert if balance drops. Do not touch the account for 29 days.
❌ Bank statement too old
Your bank statement was issued more than 31 days before you submitted your visa application.
✅ Fix: Your statement date must be within 31 days of your application submission date.
❌ Wrong type of funds
Showing cryptocurrency, stocks, property value, overdraft facility, or credit card limit as proof of funds. These are NOT accepted.
✅ Fix: Only current accounts, savings accounts, and regulated bank accounts are accepted.
❌ Using parents' funds without proof
Funds are in your parents' account but you didn't include a birth certificate and signed consent letter.
✅ Fix: Include birth certificate + signed sponsor consent letter + parents' 28-day compliant statements.
❌ Wrong IELTS test type
Taking standard IELTS instead of IELTS for UKVI. Not all IELTS certificates are accepted for the student visa.
✅ Fix: Book IELTS for UKVI specifically — or another approved SELT: PTE UKVI, LanguageCert SELT, Trinity GESE.
❌ Not enough total funds
Forgetting to add remaining tuition fees to living costs. Students only show the living costs amount but not the unpaid tuition balance on their CAS.
✅ Fix: Total needed = (tuition fees − deposit paid) + living costs. Check your CAS for the exact remaining fee balance.
❌ Sudden large deposits
A large amount of money suddenly appeared in your account just before the 28 days — UKVI caseworkers are trained to spot this pattern.
✅ Fix: Build up funds gradually over 60+ days. If you must consolidate, do it at least 60 days before applying.
❌ Genuine student doubt
The visa officer doesn't believe you're a genuine student. Your course doesn't match your background, or your personal statement is vague and unconvincing.
✅ Fix: Write a specific, tailored personal statement. Use our AI Personal Statement Generator — £14.99.
